The silicon element in silicon carbon alloy exists in the form of a single substance, while the silicon in silicon carbide exists in the form of a compound, which has an essential difference.

Conceptually

Silicon carbide is an inorganic substance, the chemical formula is SiC, is the quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), wood chips (the production of green silicon carbide need to add salt) and other raw materials through the resistance furnace high temperature smelting.

Silicon-carbon alloy is a kind of alloy with silicon and carbon as the main elements, usually silica, petroleum coke and coal pitch as raw materials, high temperature reduction reaction in high temperature electric furnace.

In silicon-carbon alloys, the silicon content is generally between 50% and 70%, and the carbon content is generally between 10% and 30%. In addition, silicon carbon alloy also contains a small amount of aluminum, calcium, iron and other elements, as well as trace impurities such as manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and so on. The content of these elements has a certain influence on the quality and properties of silicon carbon alloy.

One of the two is an inorganic substance, and the other is an alloy, which is the biggest difference between silicon carbide and silicon carbon alloy.

Production technology

Silicon carbide

The smelting of silicon carbide requires the use of high-purity raw materials, including quartz sand, petroleum coke, anthracite and so on. These raw materials need to be pre-treated by crushing, grinding, screening, etc., to ensure that the particle size and composition of the raw materials meet the requirements. The smelting of silicon carbide is to react high-purity raw materials with reducing agents (such as wood chips and salt) at high temperatures to separate silicon and carbon atoms from the raw materials and form silicon carbide molecules. The silicon carbide melt obtained by smelting needs to go through casting, stripping, cooling and other processes to get different shapes and specifications of silicon carbide products.

Silicon carbon alloy

The production process of silicon carbon alloy is relatively simple, and it is generally produced by electric furnace or metallurgical method. The electric furnace method is to take silica and coke as the main raw materials, and mix them in a certain proportion to react in a high temperature electric furnace. First, silica and coke are mixed in a certain proportion and put into an electric furnace to react at high temperature to form a silicon-carbon alloy. Metallurgical law is the use of iron silicon and silicon carbide as the main raw materials, smelted in high temperature smelting furnace.

Function and use

Silicon carbide

In the metallurgical industry, silicon carbide is mainly used in the following aspects:

Steel deoxidizer: silicon carbide can be used as a steel deoxidizer to make the quality of molten steel stable, and has the effect of refining grains and removing the total harmful impurities of molten steel. After use, the casting temperature of molten steel is high, the casting quality is good, and the unit cost is low.

Carburizer: silicon carbide can be used to increase the carbon content in steel and improve the hardness and strength of steel.

Ferro silicon alternatives: Silicon carbide can replace ferro silicon and carburizer, reducing the cost of steelmaking.

High temperature materials: silicon carbide has high thermal conductivity, high corrosion resistance, high strength and other characteristics, can be used as high temperature materials, such as steelmaking furnace lining, casting mold and so on.

Slag cleaning agent: Silicon carbide can be used as slag cleaning agent to help remove harmful impurities in molten steel.

Silicon carbon alloy

Silicon carbon alloy has a wide range of applications, can be used as deoxidizer, carburizer, refractory materials, high strength metal materials, etc. Because of its high carbon and high silicon characteristics, it can replace traditional metallurgical materials such as ferro silicon, silicon carbide, carburizer, etc., improve the quality of molten steel, improve product performance, reduce steelmaking costs, and increase economic benefits.

In addition, silicon carbon alloy can also be applied to wear resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance and other fields. It can be seen that silicon carbide and silicon carbon alloy are two different materials.
