Silico Manganese, also known as silicon manganese alloy, is a large, silver-lustrous composite deoxidizer frequently used in steelmaking. It serves as a reducing agent in the production of low-carbon ferromanganese and the electro-silicothermal production of metal manganese. When added to steel, manganese iron alloy improves reduction, and enhances the steel’s toughness, hardness, strength, and elasticity. Silicon acts as an effective graphitizing agent, converting carbon in cast iron into free graphitic carbon. Standard gray cast iron and ductile cast iron require a minimum of 4% silicon. Typically, manganese and silicon are introduced to molten steel through ferromanganese, silicomanganese, and ferrosilicon.

  • Silico Manganese 6014: Minimum 60% Mn, Minimum 14% Si, Maximum 0.04% P, Maximum 0.04% S.
  • Silico Manganese 6517: Minimum 65% Mn, Minimum 17% Si, Maximum 0.04% P, Maximum 0.04% S.
  • Silico Manganese 6818: Minimum 68% Mn, Minimum 18% Si, Maximum 0.04% P, Maximum 0.04% S.
Composition of Raw Materials in Silico Manganese Production
Silico manganese alloy can be continuously smelted in submerged arc furnaces of various sizes, including large, medium, and small. Currently, major manufacturers of silico manganese are trending towards using larger, fully enclosed electric furnaces. To ensure high-quality silico manganese products, the ore used must have a specific ratio of ferromanganese and manganese-phosphorus. The performance of the final product improves with higher manganese content in the manganese ore.

The primary specifications for raw materials used in silicomanganese production are as follows:

  • Silica: Must contain at least 97% SiO2, with P2O5 content below 0.02%. The grain size should be between 10-40mm, free from soil and other impurities.
  • Coke: Should have a fixed carbon content greater than 84% and ash content less than 14%. For small and medium electric furnaces, the coke particle size should be 3-13mm, while for large electric furnaces, it should be 5-25mm.
  • Manganese Ore: The impurity P2O5 content should be minimized. The typical particle size ranges from 10-80mm, with particles smaller than 10mm making up no more than 10% of the total ore.

Silico Manganese Production Process

Silico manganese alloy is created through the reduction of manganese oxide and silicon dioxide present in manganese ore and silica using charcoal in a carbothermic furnace. This smelting process involves several key raw materials and agents:

  1. Reducing Agents:
    • Carbonaceous materials such as charcoal.
  2. Raw Materials:
    • Manganese ore.
    • Manganese-rich slag.
    • Sintered manganese ore.
    • Roasted manganese ore.
    • Silica.
  3. Solvents (used to facilitate the process):
    • Lime.
    • Dolomite.
    • Fluorite.

These components are continuously fed into an electric furnace, where the carbothermic reduction takes place, producing silico manganese alloy.
